Einars Repše

Einars Repše was born on December 9, 1961 in Jelgava, Latvia. He studied physics at the University of Latvia in Riga and received his university degree in 1986.

Between 1986 and 1990, he worked as a computer system designer in the Special Bureau of Scientific Instrument Design at the Latvian Academy of Sciences.

In 1990, Mr. Repše was elected to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia (the acting Parliament, 1990-1993). He was appointed Chairman of the Banking and Finance Subcommittee that functioned within the Economy Committee of the Supreme Council. From 1991 to 1993, he was also Member of the Monetary Reform Committee. Mr. Repše was the author of the concept of the monetary reform in Latvia, and it was under his guidance that the reform was implemented.

Mr. Repše was appointed Governor of the Bank of Latvia on September 3, 1991. On August 28, 1997, the Saeima (Parliament of the Republic of Latvia) elected Mr. Repše for a second term. As Governor, Mr. Repše is Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Bank of Latvia.

In 1997, Mr. Repše was awarded with the Order of the Three Stars, Commander's Degree.
