Mike Josef

Lord Mayor, City of Frankfurt am Main

Mike Josef is the Mayor of the City of Frankfurt am Main. He is responsible for the City Administration and for Sports. He was elected Mayor of the city in March 2023 and sworn into office in May 2023. From July 2016 to May 2023, Mike Josef was a full-time deputy mayor, responsible for planning and housing, with sport subsequently added in September 2021.

Mike Josef was born in Qamishli, Syria, in 1983. His family was part of the Christian minority; they left the country in 1987. After completing his secondary education in Ulm-Wiblingen and passing his technical college entrance qualification in Neu-Ulm, he undertook a period of civilian service with the German Red Cross in Ulm. In 2004, he obtained his intermediate diploma in social work at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. He studied political science, history and law at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, graduating in 2010 with a degree in political science. From 2011 until his election to the executive board of the City of Frankfurt, Mike Josef was a city council member in the Frankfurt Römer City Hall and worked as DGB (union) organisation secretary in south-east Hesse.

He lives in Frankfurt am Main, is married and the father of two sons
